We often think improving our health means changing ourselves. We tell ourselves we need more motivation, more discipline, or a better routine. But sometimes the most powerful place to start is not with ourselves, but with what surrounds us. Our environment quietly influences how we eat, move, rest, and think about our health every day. When we pay attention to our environment, we can begin to make small changes that make caring for ourselves feel a little easier.

There are four environments worth considering. Your physical environment includes the spaces where you live and work. Is water easy to grab? Are nourishing foods accessible? Do you have opportunities to move and places that support rest? Your social environment includes the people and conversations around you. Supportive relationships, shared meals, and connection can positively influence health, while constant diet talk or body comparison can make it harder. Your digital environment matters too. The accounts you follow and the health information you consume can either educate and encourage you or leave you feeling overwhelmed, confused, and like you are never doing enough.

Finally, there is your internal environment, the way you speak to and care for yourself. Pay attention to the words you use when a meal does not go as planned, you miss a workout, or life gets busy. Health does not have to be built through criticism or perfection. This September, instead of asking yourself to try harder, take a look at your environment. What is already supporting you? What is making health more difficult? You do not need to change everything. Choose one small thing you can change around you and see what becomes easier.
