When most people think about healthy eating, they think about protein, fiber, vegetables, or cutting back on sugar. Rarely does anyone say, “I wonder if my meal tastes good.”

But maybe we should.

As a dietitian, I’ve noticed that one of the biggest barriers to long-term healthy eating isn’t a lack of nutrition knowledge—it’s that we’ve forgotten food is meant to be enjoyed. Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that if food tastes too good, it must not be good for us.

The truth? Enjoying your food doesn’t work against your health, it can actually support it.

Have you ever eaten a salad because you felt like you should, only to find yourself rummaging through the pantry an hour later? It wasn’t necessarily because you were still hungry. Sometimes the meal simply wasn’t satisfying. When we ignore taste, we often keep searching for something that feels complete.

That doesn’t mean every meal needs to be gourmet or include dessert. It means giving yourself permission to make healthy food enjoyable. Add fresh herbs to your vegetables. Use the dressing you actually like. Sprinkle nuts on your salad for crunch. Pair sweet summer fruit with your lunch. Small touches can make a nourishing meal something you genuinely look forward to.

Healthy eating isn’t about checking off nutrition boxes. It’s about creating meals that nourish your body and leave you feeling satisfied.

This summer, I invite you to ask yourself one simple question before a meal:

“How can I make this meal both nourishing and enjoyable?”

Sometimes the healthiest change isn’t adding another nutrition rule. It’s remembering that food was always meant to be both fuel and pleasure.

At Imagine Wellness, we believe sustainable nutrition isn’t built on perfection, it’s built on meals you enjoy enough to make again tomorrow.
