This week I got into a GREAT discussion with my co-author about systemic structures such as the food industry and whether it’s a problem or not. There were SOME great points, opinions, and ideas thrown around and we both agreed we saw things differently AND we both had a similar desire to step into people’s worlds and love them. Meaning, we can have these big ideas and big discussions yet at the end of the day, we want people to be seen, heard, and validated. So when the food industry talks and big Pharma talks are being discussed, make sure that your opinion doesn’t stomp on someone’s heart. Make sure that your opinion doesn’t drain their spirit. When you stomp on someone’s heart or drain their spirit, they won’t hear you anyway. When you are having these systemic discussions, make sure to preface thats what they are. ESPECIALLY when it comes to food because ALL humans experience food and the probability that a person will internalize the message is HIGH. Meaning, they will take this information and apply it to themselves, increasing the risk for guilt or shame, which increases risk for disease.
Our brain thinks in 3 different arenas if you will, systemic, extrinsic and intrinsic. Systemic thinking is black or white, good or bad, all or nothing. This is when we talk about legalistic issues or law. Extrinsic thinking is discussing money, rewards, praise, a grade, a promotion or even a job. It might be representative of you, however is outside of you. In health and wellness, it can be your cholesterol, your weight or the amount you can lift or how fast you can run. The intrinsic type of thought is related to YOU, your worth, your experience and your feelings. A human has priceless and infinite value.
Maybe you were coming to read this blog to see my opinion on the food industry, and you got something different. Yet my practice DIVES into YOU and I care about YOU and how YOU think. I do have an opinion on the food industry but maybe we can save that for private discussion. I was once told that you praise in public and criticize in private and I LOVED this saying. What are your thoughts?
